Renovation of 鈥榞rey鈥 building on Bund to start soon
AN expert team will start work next month on the renovation of a century-old building in the Bund area that last month received an unwanted paint job.
“Specialists in the protection of historic buildings, as well as materials and chemistry experts will be invited to decide how best to remove the paint,” said Bian Weimin, director of the Huangpu District Housing Management Bureau.
The Huangpu government said it will punish Zhongjin Stock Investment Management Co, the tenant of No. 102 Guangdong Road, which authorized the painting of the building, and ask it to meet the cost of the renovation.
A representative of that company told Shanghai Daily yesterday it has hired Shanghai Construction Decoration Group to carry out the repair work.
“We deeply apologize and are willing to accept any punishment from the government,” the person said.
Bian said the work will take at least two months.
The former headquarters of Japanese firm Mitsubishi Co was built in 1914. In 1999 it was given protected status, which means its tenants must apply to the government for permission to undertake any renovation or decorative works.
Zheng Shiling, a renowned expert on historic buildings, said that despite the best efforts of the renovation team, restoring the facade of the building to its former glory will be “nearly impossible.”
