Residents angry at black swan鈥檚 killing and 2 suspects detained

TWO men have been detained on suspicion of stealing and killing a black swan from a local park.
According to the police, a guard at the park reported a swan was missing on April 20. Investigation, including checking surveillance videos, brought the suspects to book, police added.
The duo, surnamed Zhou and Wang, were alleged to have stolen the swan around 1am on April 20 from downtown Xujuahui Park, which opens around the clock. They were then said to have slaughtered and eaten it at their rented home.
The suspects said they had planned to steal fish out of the park’s pond but were unable to do so as guards were patrolling, according to police.
Zhou then said he had seen a swan near the exit and caught it. Police added he choked the swan to prevent it screaming. The suspects then returned home with their bounty.
Police said Zhou confessed to slaughtering and cooking the bird, but they didn’t enjoy its taste.
Further investigation is under way.
Meanwhile many local citizens went to Xujiahui Park yesterday to see the remaining four black swans there and spoke of their shock at learning what had happened.
“We always teach our children not to hurt even grass and flowers,” said a woman surname Pan. “How could the men kill the swan that has given us and our children so much fun.”
Another woman said she had lived near the park two years ago and had seen “children feeding and playing with the swans so happily. I come to let my grandson enjoy the same happiness today but am really shocked at the news.”
A cleaner at the park said that the dead swan was the only one successfully hatched from four eggs.
“I have been working here for about 12 years and it’s the first time for me to hear about such a ridiculous thing. The swans have been our key attraction in the park and usually visitors play with them happily.”
