Residents reach for library cards
SHANGHAI residents are increasingly voracious readers, according to the latest figures from the Shanghai library.
The number of card holders grew to nearly 3.8 million from 3.1 million, according to the library, which found that 48 percent of users are male and 51 percent are female.
More than 1.3 million card holders are children.
A total of 829,000 readers borrowed books from the library’s 257 branches, as well as service points in districts and universities.
The largest number of books borrowed by a single reader last year was 3,181, which is more than eight books a day on average.
“Sheng Shi Liang Yuan” (Good Marriage in a Flourishing Age), a period romance novel by Feng Qing, was borrowed 2,816 times, making it the most popular book of 2015.
