Residents warned to be careful around dogs
A sharp rise in the number of people being bitten by their own dogs has been blamed on the females of the species entering the period of oestrus as the temperature rises.
In the worst cases, a 3-year-old girl’s pet dog tore the skin on the right side of her face almost completely off, and a 72-year-old woman suffered a fractured leg when she fell after being bitten by her dog, according to Yin Zhifa, an official at Punan Hospital.
The hospital in the Pudong New Area is treating more than 50 patients who have been attacked by their dogs per day, up two-thirds from earlier in the year, and 90 percent of them have been bitten by their own pets, according to Yin, who warned that the situation will worsen as the city gets warmer, making animals more irritable.
“The peak times are July and August, according to our records from pervious years,” he said, adding that the hospital has in the past seen more than 100 patients per day during the summer.
Yin advises people to be cautious when interacting with pets and to never let children play with them alone.
He also warned: “Anyone bitten or injured by a dog must seek medical advice. Some people in the city have died from rabies.”
