Residents worry about impact of Metro plan
RESIDENTS living near the Chunshen River in suburban Minhang District are worried about the latest construction plan for the city’s Metro system.
One of the lines will run over the river, affecting many residential complexes and schools in the area, say residents.
The plan, covering nine Metro lines to be constructed between 2017 and 2025, was released last Monday to give residents a chance to express their opinions about the project’s environmental impact.
According to the plan, the line will link Hongqiao Transportation Hub with Shanghai East Railway Station. It is expected to run along the Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway line, the Chunshen River, and the Outer Ring Road, stretching 68 kilometers with stops at eight stations. But more importantly, it said it will be constructed entirely above ground, which has triggered heated discussions.
As of 10pm yesterday, the topic #Protect Chunshen River# had attracted more than 590,000 clicks on the website Weibo.
“There are several residential complexes and schools located near the river, and the construction will bring unbearable noise and electromagnetic radiation,” Tao Yanlin, a local resident, told Shanghai Daily.
“We have an ecological green area near the river. The new Metro line will definitely affect the ecological system.”
However, the government claims that studies it has conducted show that the plan is environmentally viable.
