Retired principal sent to jail

A RETIRED public high school principal in the Pudong New Area was sentenced to five years and six months in prison for buying pirated books, taking bribes and embezzling more than 230,000 yuan (US$36,125), a Shanghai court ruled yesterday.

Prosecutors began investigating the activities of the principal, surnamed Sun, three years after he retired following a tip given in 2011.

From 2000 to 2003, the school bought more than 1 million yuan in pirated books from a private book vendor surnamed Xu, who gave Sun more than 80,000 yuan in kickbacks for his help, the court said.

In 2004, Sun learned Xu charged the school an extra 400,000 yuan for books to cover the bribes he paid Sun. He asked Xu to return 150,000 yuan in cash and make up the difference with books, the court heard.

Instead of transferring the sum to the school's account, Sun embezzled the 150,000 yuan before retiring in 2007.
