Road bridge closed after boat strike

A ROAD bridge in Songjiang District was closed to traffic yesterday amid concerns it is in danger of collapse.

The surface of the Xietang Bridge, which spans the Huangpu River and forms part of the Songzheng Highway, has begun to slope and there is a crack in the pier, Songjiang police said

Authorities believe the damage was caused by a vessel which struck the bridge pier and fled on Sunday night. Police are hunting for it.

A road administration official surnamed Gao said teams are trying to assess the damage to the structure and will then decide on the best course of action.

“We hope to work out how to repair the bridge within two days,” Gao said, adding that it will remain closed until further notice.

Traffic police cordoned off the area and advised drivers and pedestrians of alternative routes. One detour for east-west traffic is the Guang’an Road tunnel, officials said.
