Runner has heart attack at finish line
A 36-year-old runner had a heart attack after crossing the finish line at the inaugural Shanghai Songjiang Half Marathon yesterday morning. The man was reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical treatment.
The runner, who was not identified, collapsed after completing the 21-km route at 10:15am in Songjiang University Town.
In last November’s Shanghai International Marathon, a 26-year-old runner also suffered cardiac problems and was attended by doctors who were running in the race.
Doctors said such incidents happen when athletes compete without adequate training.
Songjiang Half Marathon and the 12-km health run, which started at the Happy Valley Amusement Park at 8am, attracted 10,000 runners.
According to the organizers, 96 percent of the participants completed their races.
