Running shoes not up to standard
MANY popular running-shoe brands on the market are not up to standard, the city’s consumer protection watchdog warned yesterday.
When inspectors tested 46 pairs of New Balance, Puma, Nike and Mizuno, they either failed to meet China’s national standard for bending resistance and wearability, or for slip resistance.
The Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission tested 46 pairs of shoes bought from department stores, outlets and online platforms. Twenty nine were international brands and 17 cost over 600 yuan (US$96.77). They were tested for bending resistance, wearability, shock-absorbtion and slip resistance.
The bending-resistance test simulates continuous walking and records whether degumming and cracking occurs after they are bent 40,000 times, the commission said.
Pairs of New Balance, Asics failed due to cracked soles, and a pair of Pumas showed degumming of the sole, the commission said.
As a result, all three brands failed to meet China’s national standard, according to the commission.
The sole of a pair of Mizuno brand men’s running shoes sold on the business-to-consumer site Tmall failed to meet the national standard for abrasion resistance and wearability, the commission said.
