SUV triggers 4-vehicle collision, kills 1 pedestrian
AN old man was killed in a four-vehicle collision last night on Tongchuan Road near Zhenguang Road, Putuo District police said today.
The accident happened around 7pm yesterday when a brand-new Toyota SUV with a Shanghai plate rear-ended a Jetta in the front, then turned sharply toward the sidewalk and knocked the old man who was walking.
The old man lay on the ground unconscious and died of his injury despite hospital rescue efforts, police said.
A witness surnamed Zhou said the Jetta lost control and was hit by a truck moving in the opposite lane. The Toyota SUV also smashed into a Lexus parked on the roadside, but people in the Lexus were not injured, police added.
After the accident, police cordoned off the road. Traffic resumed one and a half hour later after the four vehicles were towed away by trailers.
Police are still investigating the case.
