Sacked man charged with arson

A FORMER IKEA employee has been jailed for 18 months for attempted arson, the Xuhui District People’s Court said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Gu, joined the company as a technician last August but was sacked three months later. His employer at the store in Xuhui District claimed he was unable to use even a spirit level, prosecutors said.

On November 16, Gu sneaked back into the store with 4 liters of petrol. He then climbed onto a high shelf and went to sleep. When store workers found him the following morning, Gu splashed the petrol on himself, his former colleagues and products, and threaten to set them all alight.

He also caused 6,000 yuan (US$988) worth of damage, the court heard.

Police were called and officers managed to persuade Gu, who is in his 40s, to climb down and give himself up.

The incident led to the store being forced to close for over three hours.
