Safety nets fitted due to manhole cover thefts
THEFTS of manhole covers are such a problem in the city that safety nets are to be fitted in the holes to prevent unsuspecting pedestrians falling in.
Putuo District plans to install nets in 42,000 manholes for sewage, electricity and telecommunications pipelines across the district by the end of next year.
It has fitted the first batch on three major roads in a trial operation.
Songjiang, Jiading and downtown Huangpu districts have also begun fitting nets.
The initiative will be rolled out across the city, the construction commission of the district announced.
The nets, made of plastic alloy with strong fibers, are tough enough to support an adult weighing over 90 kilograms.
City residents have long complained about the hazard of missing manhole covers.
While some covers are dislodged and go missing during rainstorms, in most cases they are prised open by thieves and sold as scrap metal.
Shanghai has about 6.5 million manholes, and thousands of covers go missing every year, the city’s construction commission has said.
