Samsung settles Note 7 law suit
SAMSUNG yesterday settled a compensation case over an exploding Galaxy Note 7 phone during a hearing yesterday in the city’s first law suit over the issue, the Jinshan District People’s Court said.
Samsung’s joint venture in Huizhou City in Guangdong Province, the maker of the phone, paid the consumer 30,000 yuan (US$4,400), the court said.
The consumer, a man surnamed Yao, sued the South Korean company on October 11, the same day the company recalled the model on the mainland, saying his new 5,988 yuan phone had exploded at his home in September, burning bedding.
Yao also sued the retailer, the Shanghai Yuanmai Trade Company, a subsidiary of China’s leading B2C shopping website, JD.com, but he dropped the case before the hearing.
From the two parties, Yao had demanded a full refund, 17,964 yuan as compensation, 2,000 yuan for damaged bedding and legal costs. He dropped the case against Samsung after yesterday’s deal.
