‘Scam gang’ targeting old arrested
SHANGHAI police said yesterday they had arrested a nine-strong telecom scam gang based in Beijing and responsible for the loss of 155,000 yuan (US$22,300) of an 81-year-old local woman.
The woman surnamed Wang, who lives in the Hengmian area in rural Pudong, said she had received calls between July and September from “government officials” who claimed to be distributing allowances to old people.
They had asked her for “commission fees” and “deposit money” in advance. Wang reported the suspected scam after not receiving any “allowances.”
Police said they had raided the gang this month. It was operating from rural Changping District in Beijing and they found more than 100,000 yuan in cash, a computer, six telephones and “a large amount of citizens’ private information” in the gang’s offices.
The suspects allegedly admitted that their scam profits topped 500,000 yuan and that they had targeted old people around China since the first half of this year.
