Scam victim says so long to savings
A WOMAN who lost 200,000 yuan (US$30,700) in a telephone scam last month is unlikely to see her money again, police said yesterday.
The victim, identified only by her surname Dai, was tricked into giving away her account and personal details after receiving an SMS she believed was from her bank.
Soon after typing in the private information on a fake website — disguised to look like the official site of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China — she found her account had been emptied.
She reported the matter to police, but was told she would probably never see her money again, as was the case for countless other victims of telecom scams.
A customer service worker from ICBC told Shanghai Daily only that people should be wary of SMS messages as “they are all scams.”
Police in Pudong said yesterday that crime groups are increasingly targeting office workers under 40 years of age.
About 60 percent of the victims of “similar scams reported in recent months” were office workers, they said, without providing comparative figures.
“The scammers probably figure that such people use mobile banking a lot,” said Zhang Yifei, head of Pudong police.
Police spokesman Tang Junwei said customers of China Mobile are most at risk.
“We found that almost all of the victims in recent cases were China Mobile subscribers using mobile banking services provided either by ICBC or China Merchants Bank,” he said.
