Scandal halts free cataract screening
A scheme that offered free cataract screening for the over-60s in Xuhui District has been halted amid allegations that a participating hospital tried to trick senior citizens into paying for unnecessary treatments and procedures, the Shanghai Morning Post reported yesterday.
The Shanghai Development Center on Aging, which organized the program, was cited as saying it took the decision after receiving several complaints from patients.
The report quoted a man as saying he was told by a doctor that he had cataracts, though during an earlier examination at a different hospital he was told he hadn’t.
A woman said she was told by a doctor under the free scheme that her cataract problem was serious, which contradicted an earlier diagnosis, the report said.
