Schizophrenic man sent to hospital after killing wife
A MAN suffering from schizophrenia who killed his wife because he believed she was trying to poison him has been sent to a mental hospital, the Minhang District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
Prosecutors said the case is still under investigation.
The husband, surnamed Kai, 33, had been diagnosed with mental illness a week earlier, after being fired from his job.
He had called police twice and told them that someone had attempted to hurt him, prosecutors said.
But Kai refused to be hospitalized, so his family took him home and he was prescribed medication.
On August 23, Kai’s wife bought breakfast for him but Kai complained of stomachache afterward.
He believed that his wife had poisoned his food as she wanted to kill him, get their property and marry other man, according to prosecutors.
At night, Kai took a knife from the kitchen and began stabbing his wife as she slept, ignoring her cries when she awoke.
Kai’s father, who also lived in the house and was woken by the disturbance, called police at around 3am.
When officers arrived they found blood all over the room and the victim almost decapitated.
Under questioning by prosecutors, Kai said he and his wife enjoyed a good relationship and seldom argued.
But he couldn’t help thinking that she would hurt him and finally killed her, he told prosecutors.
Kai was later confirmed to have schizophrenia by the Shanghai Mental Health Center.
