Schoolboy found with bullets in bag
A 13-year-old boy was found carrying four live rifle bullets with him when taking a train at Shanghai Railway Station, police said yesterday.
The rounds were discovered during routine security checks. The boy, from the southwest province of Guizhou, was traveling with his father from Shanghai to Wuxi.
The boy said he had found the bullets in a cave in his hometown in May this year and kept them in his bag when traveling from Guizhou to Shanghai “to ward off evil spirits,” police said.
The boy and his father said they traveled to Shanghai in a relative’s car to spend the summer holiday.
Police said although the boy broke the law, he was spared punishment because he was under 14.
The offense carries a penalty of up to 10 days in detention and a fine of 500 yuan (US$74) according to the law. The rounds were 7.62 millimeters.
Authorities cautioned the father to educate his son about the need to follow the law.
Authorities have also found 96 banned daggers and knives and 1,285 lighters in security checks since July 1.
