Schools get lawyers to handle accident claims

LEGAL services are being made available to all Pudong New Area schools to handle claims arising from accidents on campus and other issues, education officials said yesterday.

By the end of the month, all 623 public schools — from kindergartens to high schools — are expected to have signed contracts with legal firms, the Pudong New Area Education Bureau said.

Lawyers will offer support in possible litigation cases and in drawing up external business and labor contracts.

Until now, schools had to organize their own legal advice independently.

This initiative comes after a survey showed many schools in the area are under great pressure dealing with incidents such as compensation claims from parents whose children were involved in accidents at school.

“It’s great to have legal counsel to help us,” said Yao Xinggang, principal of Yuanxi Primary School.

Yao said many principals used to ask friends for help.

“With the help of professional legal counsel, the interests of all parties can be ensured,” Yao added.
