Scooter riders snatch bags from cyclists
TWO men have been detained for robbing cyclists from their fast-driving scooter, Shanghai police said today.
The two suspects surnamed Dong and Wang have robbed at least 10 cyclists since March by snatching their bags and belongings as they swooped past them, police said.
The total value of their plunder is put at over 40,000 yuan (US$6,343), police said.
On March 22, a woman surnamed Zhou was robbed a cell phone and 700 yuan when she was riding her electric bike along Yixian Road in Hongkou District, police said.
Dong and Wang were identified in surveillance footages. They had appeared in a video game parlor on Tongnan Road in Baoshan District.
On March 26, the pair robbed another female cyclist surnamed Zhao in Hongkou District, grabbing her bag from the front basket.
Police confirmed that two cases were committed by Dong and Wang and seized them on March 27 in the video game parlor in Baoshan along with their scooter, a stolen laptop and five cell phones.
The pair later confessed their crimes and police warned people not to place valuables in the front basket of their bicycles.
