Search on for man who left his baby in a hotel

POLICE are trying to trace a man who apparently abandoned his 10-month-old son in a hotel earlier this week.

The infant was found about noon on Wednesday by a cleaner at the hotel who told police she heard him crying and became concerned. When she entered the room, she saw the child on the bed beside a half-full baby’s bottle and some diapers.

The hotel’s management contacted the police who, after reviewing footage from security cameras, identified the baby’s father as a 32-year-old Songjiang District resident surnamed Zhu.

Zhu checked into the hotel with the child on Tuesday evening, but was seen leaving the building without him the following morning.

When police tried to contact the father using the cellphone number he provided when he checked in, their calls went unanswered.

They subsequently contacted Zhu’s parents who went to the hotel and took the child home.

Police said the infant appeared fine despite having been left alone.

As of last night Zhu remained missing, and police said they currently have no information as to why he left the baby unattended.

The child’s grandparents said Zhu is a frequent gambler and in recent weeks had quarrelled often with his wife.

The child normally lives with his maternal grandparents, they said.

Police did not name the hotel, but said it is located close to the Shanghai Railway Station in Zhabei District.
