Second gang on trial over fatal gun fight
THE five-member Fujian Province gang, one side involved in the fatal gun fight in Putuo District last May, went on trial yesterday and denied some of the charges.
The Fujian gang was charged with making guns and bullets, disturbing the social peace and obstructing police from performing their duty.
All the members except one denied belonging to a criminal gang headed by Liu Xiaohua, 33. They said Liu was their friend and they were willing to help him out by doing what he asked.
The hearing at the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court is scheduled to last for three days.
The court previously tried six young people from the opposing gang, but has not yet released a verdict.
Four members of the Fujian gang, under Liu's order, went to a hotel on Changshou Road to ask Dong Shuang, a 20-year-old alleged woman drug trader, to return 20,000 yuan (US$2,928) she borrowed from Liu.
Dong said she had no money to return and her boyfriend allegedly called some allies. The conflict flared into a group fight outside the hotel involving guns and knives. Two people were shot to death and two were injured.
Liu told the court that the group fight had nothing to do with him. He said he learned about the fight only after it took place.
The Fujian gang were also charged with making guns and bullets. They allegedly bought starters' guns and put self-made barrels on them. Police seized 13 refitted guns and 154 bullets.
Liu said they made guns in case enemies took revenge. Cheng Yingwen, 24, said they carried guns for fun.
Liu and Cheng went to Changshu, Jiangsu Province, with Dong in April 2009 to buy drugs at 12,000 yuan and distributed the drugs to the members to sell in Shanghai, prosecutors alleged.
At the hearing, all the defendants denied selling drugs. They said they just took the drugs themselves.
