Secret smoke costs man dearly
A MAN so desperate for a cigarette lit up in a toilet on a bullet train has been fined 500 yuan (US$75) because the smoke triggered an alarm and forced the train to slow down, Shanghai city railway police said.
The passenger, surnamed Li, was on a train from Chendu in Sichuan Province to Kunshan in Jiangsu Province on November 2. The Shanghai authority is also in charge of security in eastern Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces.
The smoker said he was hit by cravings when on board and smoked in a toilet, hoping not to get caught.
But the automatic alarm system was immediately triggered, forcing the train to slow down.
Li was handed to local police when the train arrived at its destination and accepted the penalty for endangering safety of railway transport.
From 2014, people who smoke on bullet train or in banned areas of other types of trains will face penalty between 500 yuan and 2,000 yuan.
The regulations was further tightened on August 15 this year to include a temporary ban prohibiting anyone caught smoking from buying a bullet train ticket.
To end the ban, the person involved must take their identity card to local railway service center and sign a safety agreement.
