Security stepped up for the festival
SHANGHAI police said yesterday that they will step up security measures during the Spring Festival — especially today and tomorrow, the last two days before the lunar new year.
Bai Shaokang, head of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, said the safety of the city throughout the holiday was of “extreme importance.”
Police would enforce the firework and firecracker ban and ensure the safety of the CCTV New Year’s live show gala, part of which will be staged at the foot of the Oriental Pearl Tower.
Police will also send officers to patrol and safeguard popular tourist spots such as the Bund, Lujiazui along the Huangpu River and Yuyuan Garden as well as shopping centers, and Buddhist and Taoist temples.
There will be about 120 events at the temples, including Longhua Temple, Jade Buddha Temple and Jing’an Temple, and 38 large events at the city’s exhibition, performance and shopping centers from the New Year to the Lantern Festival on February 11.
Police said that they had taken safety measures to best prevent terrorist attacks, stampedes and fires.
