Security stepped up for tourism festival
POLICE are stepping up security measures for the upcoming Shanghai Tourism Festival, officials said yesterday.
A record 4,500 security personnel will be deployed along Huaihai Road where the grand parade of the festival will be held on Saturday night and two stands usually erected near Shanghai Times Square will not be used, the city’s public security bureau announced at the second conference of the 2015 Shanghai Tourism Festival organizing committee yesterday.
Last year, the grand parade, which opens the festival, attracted about 500,000 residents and tourists, according to the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
It is estimated that the number will increase this year, police said.
A total of 23 floats will be featured at this year’s parade, together with 21 overseas performance teams.
The strictest security measures in the festival’s 20-plus year history also include enhanced security checks at Metro stations, garbage bins and flower beds in advance and strengthened patrols at nearby businesses and streets.
The enhanced security measures come after the Bund stampede that left 36 people dead and dozens injured on December 31.
This year’s festival from Saturday to October 6 will feature a record 59 activities.
