Security tightened on Bund ahead of holiday

ENHANCED measures will be taken to prevent overcrowding in the Bund area of the city over the Labor Day holiday, police said yesterday.

As well as more officers on the streets, the flow of pedestrians in and around the popular area will be closely controlled, they said.

On Nanjing Road E. — which runs perpendicular to the Bund — barriers will be erected to prevent heavy pedestrian flows, while police will redirect people via alternative routes if required.

On the Bund itself, some sections will be made “one way” in a bid to prevent a repeat of the events of New Year’s Eve when 36 people died in a massive crush.

Also, anti-riot barriers will be erected to provide an access route for police in the event of an emergency.

Though no special events are planned for the Bund over the holiday, buildings on both sides of the river will be lit up between 6:30pm and 10:30pm from today until Saturday, the city’s landscape watchdog said recently.
