See fruits of growers鈥 labors
A FRUIT fair opens tomorrow in an initiative to help suburban growers who are enduring tough times, the city’s agricultural commission said yesterday.
Bad weather and the ongoing government frugality drive are among reasons cited for difficult conditions.
“This year’s rainy season was particularly long, which stunted growth, followed by the devastation caused by Typhoon Chan-Hom last month,” Fan Hongwei, chairman of Shanghai Melon and Fruit Industry Association told Shanghai Daily.
“City fruit growers have lost on average of 30 percent of their annual crop this year.”
But he added that the recent heatwave means that fruit on sale now is sweet and juicy.
Meanwhile, growers who relied on bulk orders from public institutions have seen these decline because of frugality rules for government and public institutions.
The three-day fair at the Shanghai International Agricultural Exhibition Center on Hongqiao Road will feature produce from 60 cooperatives in the city.
