Senior care nurses in spotlight

A civil affairs school is to be set up to educate on nursing skills to handle senior care.
Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau will cooperate with Shanghai Open University this year to set up the school, which will promote the overall service quality.
Earlier this year, local lawmakers and political advisers submitted 28 proposals for improvement in senior care.
Currently, there are about 45,000 nursing staff for the city’s seniors, but most of them lack professional skills, according to Zhu Qinhao, director of the bureau.
The city’s plan envisages another 45,000 nursing providers by 2020 and that at least 95 percent of the nursing staff will be required to have professional certificates.
Nearly 40,000 senior citizens have applied for unified assessment on their needs for public care service since a special program to provide fair opportunities for older people was launched at the end of 2014.
More than half of the applicants have been distributed to different styles of services after assessment, including community care and nursing homes.
