Senior hit-and-run drunk driver charged
A 62-YEAR-OLD hit-and-run drunk driver who struck a passer-by while speeding away from police last month has been charged with endangering public security, Huangpu District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The driver, surnamed You, was an unlicensed taxi driver who had previously been jailed several times for theft and fraud, prosecutors said.
The court heard that You got drunk at dinner with friends on September 14 but decided to drive later.
Driving on Huaihai Road M. at about midnight, he was motioned to make a detour by a traffic policeman as the road was restricted for a rehearsal of the float parade during the Shanghai Tourism Festival.
You thought the officer was cracking down on drunk driving and drove into the off-limits area to avoid being stopped.
His car hit a passer-by who suffered a broken nose, cheekbone and right eye socket.
You was motioned to stop by a police patrol but sped off and caused another two accidents on Xizang Road, damaging a car and a taxi.
Several hours later, he turned himself in to police.
Police found the alcohol level in You’s blood was 1.13 milligrams per milliliter, while the limit for drunk driving is 0.8 milligrams per milliliter.
