Senior population up 5.3% in 2015
SHANGHAI’S senior population rose by 5.3 percent in 2015 from a year earlier and accounted for over 30 percent of permanent residents for the first time, the city’s civil affairs authorities said yesterday.
The number of people aged 60 or above reached 4.36 million by the end of last year, or 30.2 percent of permanent residents, according to the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
The number of seniors aged 80 or above grew steadily, and the number of people aged between 60 and 80 has risen sharply in recent years, said Yin Zhigang, deputy director of the Shanghai Research Center on Aging.
“The sharp increase is because of the baby boom that started in the mid- to late-1950s,” said Yin.
Jing’an, Hongkou and Huangpu districts have the highest percentage of seniors.
More than 80 percent of people reaching old age in the next couple of years will have only one child to support them, Yin said, adding that growth in the senior population will continue until 2025, putting increasing pressure on care homes.
Life expectancy in Shanghai rose last year to 82.75 years, compared to 82.29 the previous year.
There were 1,751 centenarians in the city at the end of 2015, of whom 1,331 were women.
