A local senior citizen allegedly lost 440,000 yuan (US$73,000) to telescammers after being persuaded to transfer money to a bank account in 27 installments from March, Yangpu police told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
The woman, surnamed Zhang, said she was lured in by a short message from a stranger after sending a complaint to Beijing about a medicine she had purchased from a hospital there, police said.
The short message promised to refund her 40 percent of the money she had paid for the medicine if she agreed to pay certain fees.
