Sentenced for causing death of her friend
A woman who left her kitchen unattended while cooking oil was being heated resulting in a fire that killed her friend, was sentenced to a year in jail with a year reprieve yesterday for negligently causing a fire, Hongkou District People’s Court said.
The woman surnamed Shen, owner of a restaurant in the Hongkou District, was cooking in her kitchen last May. Two friends had called on her, and she went to chat with them, during which time cooking oil had caught alight and set fire to the kitchen, the court said.
Shen and one of her friends suffered burns to the face and arm. But the other friend died.
As she had offered 350,000 yuan (US$50,600) in compensation and she had expressed regret, she was granted a suspended sentence, according to the court.
