Separate AIDS cell for inmates

SHANGHAI has set up a separate cell for prisoners suffering from AIDS in Qingpu District as the number of infected prisoners soared in a decade.

The prison has had 389 AIDS/HIV positive inmates since 2005 who were all kept with other prisoners.

The separate cell created for them can hold 220 prisoners at a time.

“One of the key reasons to set up a separate section for these prisoners was because of the increase in their numbers over the years,” a prison official said yesterday. “There was just a dozen of them in 2005. Now there are 117.”

The official said they needed special care — both at the administrative level and medically — as well as psychological counseling.
