Separated twins off respirator
FOUR-MONTH-OLD conjoined twin girls have been removed from respirators following surgery to separate them, according to officials at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center.
If the two continue breathing independently over the next two days, they will be taken off the critical list.
The girls, An An and Xin Xin - "safe and relieved" in Chinese - are in the intensive care unit after separation surgery on September 5.
The pair, from neighboring Zhejiang Province, were found to be conjoined during a check-up 18 weeks into the pregnancy. They were born connected at the liver, chest bone and heart sac, the covering around the heart.
"They are recovering very well and are expected to leave hospital in a month," said Dr Liu Jinfen, the medical center's president.
