Shanghai aims big for sports

SHANGHAI will build more public sports facilities and develop industries related to sports to become a “world famous sports city” by 2025.

Besides hosting international events and competitions like the Formula 1 Grand Prix (motor racing), Shanghai Rolex Masters (tennis), WGC-HSBC Champions (golf), more medium- and small-size sports venues will be built to ensure every citizen has an average of 2.6 square meters of public area for sports activities, Vice Mayor Zhao Wen said yesterday.

Schools will be encouraged to open their sports facilities to the public, while students will be guaranteed at least one hour of sports activity in school everyday. The city government hopes over 45 percent citizens will participate in some kind of sports activity in the next 10 years.

Zhao said a running track will be built on the Pudong side of the Huangpu River, while more suburban parks will be fitted with sports facilities. The city will spend over 300 billion yuan (US$47.1 billion) by 2025 in sports related services.
