Shanghai authorities found made-in-France Hermes clothing containing excessive formaldehyde

NINE batches of Hermes clothing made in France failed quality tests for containing excessive levels of carcinogenic formaldehyde, the city's entry and exit authorities said.

The formaldehyde amount of these clothing was found to exceed the maximum limit of China's national standard and they were checked between January and March last year, the Shanghai Entry and Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau said.

These clothing has been destroyed or shipped back.

Doctors say excessive formaldehyde can lead to headaches, dermatitis, respiratory disease, eczema, scytitis and even malignant tumors and leukemia.

The bureau said it has increased the frequency of sample testing of imported Hermes clothing.
