Shanghai awakes to heavy downpour

HEAVY downpours flooded city’s roads and slowed down the pace of pedestrians in Shanghai yesterday.

According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, the downpour, brought by a low pressure, triggered a yellow alert in Jinshan District at noon for thunder and lightning.

By 2pm, most districts had a rainfall of about 10 to 20 millimeters. Chongming County had the largest precipitation of 20.6 millimeters, followed by Minhang District at 17.4. The reading at benchmark Xujiahui weather station was 13.7 millimeters.

The skies are expected to dry out today. The rest of the week is likely to be cloudy.

It will be warmer with the mercury hitting 28 degrees Celsius. Temperatures between Wednesday and Saturday will however range between 17 and 25 degrees.

Some residents said the rains this spring have been more frequent than in the past few years. The data from the weather bureau showed that the precipitation recorded by Xujiahui weather station this year reached 420 millimeters, 56 millimeters higher than the average 364.
