Shanghai shuts down 5 public WeChat accounts over real estate misinformation
SHANGHAI government shut down five public WeChat accounts on Tuesday and suspended 13 others for 30 days for spreading rumors about a supposed new policy for tightening the real estate market.
The WeChat accounts featured misinformation that the local government would increase down payments for some homebuyers from September.
On Monday, the government denied that new measures were being considered.
The five accounts are “zjshanghailoushi,” “CREF-EliteClub,” “hanwenlong—ish,” “shanghailord” and “shangshanghaixm.”
The suspended accounts belong to some of the largest news portals in China including sina.com, sohu.com, ifeng.com and wallstreetcn.com as well as the official accounts of some real estate agencies including Lianjia, Baoyuan and Centaline.
WeChat is a popular instant messaging service in China with public blogging functions.
Government can punish instant messaging service users with restrictions, suspensions and permanent bans for spreading misinformation, according to China’s regulations ruling Internet services.
