Shanghai tops all for cost of weddings
A wedding is more expensive in Shanghai than anywhere else on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Wedding Trade Association said yesterday.
A comparison with other major cities shows that a wedding banquet in Shanghai costs 3,360 yuan (US$531) per table, while that for Beijing and Hangzhou are 2,200 yuan and 2,500 yuan respectively, officials said. And prices are rising eight to 15 percent year on year.
According to Daoxila.com, China's leading online wedding banquet booking platform, luxurious hotels will raise prices the most next year, as they are the most popular wedding venue. About 30 percent of local new couples choose hotels as their wedding halls, it said.
"This year new couples spend about 63,800 yuan on a banquet, and next year the expense will rise to around 72,200 yuan," said Liang Juan, supervisor of the website's banquet department.
Other costs, including wedding photos and dresses, will also be about 10 percent more expensive next year in Shanghai, said the website.
Officials said the number of marriage certificates increases every year, but the number of weddings doesn't because of the high expense.
"Our statistics show that this year 150,000 couples held weddings in Shanghai, and next year the number will not change much," said He Lina, secretary general of the association. "But we expect there will be more couples tying the knot legally as next year is the Year of the Dragon."
Jo Wang, 28, married nearly two years ago, is still saving money with her husband for their wedding. "We don't want to make up with an unsatisfactory environment for our wedding, but that means a lot, lot of money," she said.
