Shanghai travelers in Thailand reported safe, but agencies watching

Travel agencies in the city have stepped up safety measures for tourists in Thailand following a coup by the Thai military yesterday.

They said there is no plan to change itineraries or suspend tour groups to Thailand as was done in Vietnam, but they will adjust schedules or routes quickly if the situation turns worse. The China National Tourism Administration has not ordered a suspension to Thailand so far.

"We have contacted our tourists in Thailand one by one and learned that they are safe, and we will keep contacting them twice a day," said He Yiwei, deputy general manager of Shanghai Datong Travel Agency.

He said the tourists reported that a nighttime curfew did not have a big impact on local life, and the situation was stable. The travel agency has reminded its tourists to avoid places with protests, big crowds and not to go out alone or at night.

It said bookings to Thailand are normal and that tour groups that have already paid will visit as scheduled.

"Our tour guides in Thailand will be asked to change routes immediately if there are changes in the political situation, as safety of tourists is the priority," He said.

One tourist who paid the agency for a trip has asked for a cancellation, and the agency has refunded most of the fees.

Online tour operator Ctrip also said its tourists in Thailand are safe. It said it will not suspend tours based on the current circumstances but will pay close attention to the political situation, and will make changes if things deteriorate.

The Shanghai China Travel International Ltd said it has reminded its tour guides and tourists in Thailand to raise awareness of safety.

Due to the political turmoil in Southeast Asia, tourists are more careful in booking to these destinations, and the number of tourists to Southeast Asian countries has dropped nearly 70 percent recently, with South Korea, Japan and Europe rising significantly, said Wang Wei, deputy general manager of the outbound tour center of the agency.

The Embassy of China in Thailand yesterday reminded Chinese who plan to visit Thailand to be cautious and not go out at night.

Thailand has been the No.1 overseas destination of Shanghai travelers in organized tour groups for three years. Last year, 451,454 Shanghai tourists in groups visited the country.
