ShanghaiTech, USC team up to offer course for screenwriters

SHANGHAITECH University and the USC School of Cinematic Arts are offering a screenwriting course in Shanghai beginning later this month to nurture young writers, officials said at the ongoing 18th Shanghai International Film Festival.

The course will run from June 19 to September 25. Twenty students will be taught by veteran American screenwriters such as Jack Epps Jr., David F. Howard, Irving Belateche, Don Bohlinger and Tom Abrams.

Epps wrote both “Top Gun” and “Dick Tracy” while Bohlinger wrote “The Experiment” and Abrams is known for “The Captain’s Wife” and “The American Princess.”

“Despite the box office boom in the domestic film industry, screenwriting is the weakest part in China’s film production,” said Yin Jie, vice president of ShanghaiTech University. “Chinese cinema still lacks originality. We believe the training program will be the start of better scripts in China.”

Yin added that the veteran writers will also offer advice on the work of local students. Excellent scripts from Chinese writers are expected to be purchased and developed into movies.

Elizabeth Daley, dean of USC School of Cinematic Arts, said the film market in China is thriving and it is now second only to Hollywood.

“Every successful film begins from the script,” Daley said. “China has so many great stories to tell and these stories can inspire people around the world.”

Hu Jinjun, director of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and TV, organizer of the Shanghai International Film Festival, said the course is a new effort to boost the domestic film industry following last autumn’s launch of Shanghai-Vancouver Film School. The school focuses on training post-production filmmakers in China.

“The school’s first 78 graduates have already received enviable job offers from notable film production companies,” Hu said. “Students who stand out in the screenwriting course may have a good future.”
