Ship spotted dumping ballast water
A large cargo ship registered in St Vincent and the Grenadines was caught illegally discharging ballast water into the Yangtze River estuary, Shanghai Wusong Marine Bureau said yesterday.
The ship was spotted discharging a red liquid from its stern by the bureau’s patrol aircraft at 2pm on Sunday. Its captain said the emission was carried out to adjust the draught of the vessel, officials said.
Discharging ballast water into a nearshore sea area breaches both China’s anti-pollution regulations and international maritime environment laws.
Ballast water may contain invasive species, paint residue or other pollutants that pose a risk to the aquatic environment.
The incident is under investigation, but the owners of the ship are likely to face a fine.
