Shopping mall to say so long to its stairway
A LARGE stairway that leads up to the Grand Gateway 66 shopping mall in the Xujiahui area of Xuhui District is to be pulled down to create more outdoor space.
The removal of the stairs will double the size of the square outside the mall, which will in the future be used as a venue for public performances and art exhibitions, the Shanghai Morning Post reported yesterday, citing the mall’s operator.
The staircase‚ which stands about two stories high‚ has been a recognizable feature of the shopping mall since its opening in 1999.
Its removal is part of a broader plan to renovate the entire Xujiahui area, the report said.
Other projects include the construction of an overhead walkway that will provide access to several malls — including Grand Gateway 66 and Metro City — and Xujiahui Park.
A brand new shopping center, with an IMAX cinema, is also in the offing, as too are more parking spaces, the report said.
A rooftop garden and cafe are slated to be built atop Metro City, it said.
