Shopping mall will close for a week due to blaze
A FIRE broke out at a shopping mall in Qingpu District yesterday, thepaper.cn reported.
The blaze started about 10:38am on the third floor of the Yolo electrical appliances mall on Gongyuan Road. Windows were broken and black smoke billowed from the four-story building.
Firefighters put out the blaze in 15 minutes and evacuated 10 people, the fire department said, adding that no one was hurt.
A 20-year-old man from Jiangxi Province allegedly told firefighters he was to blame.
Qingpu police told Shanghai Daily that an investigation is under way.
Workers at the mall were quoted as saying that they did not know the man and had no idea why he had set fire.
Salespeople tried to put out the blaze but failed, so they called the fire department.
Two rooms, one on the third floor and one on the forth, were damaged, the website report said.
An employee was quoted as saying the room on the third floor used to be a canteen for the Xinhua Book Store. The mall will be closed for at least a week, a director said.
