‘Smashing fun’ lands catapult man in custody
A DENNIS the Menace wannabe got his comeuppance this week after smashing his neighbors’ windows with ball bearings fired from his catapult.
According to police in Yangpu District, a male of unspecified age has been placed under criminal detention after embarking on two days of naughtiness worthy of either the British or American versions of the cartoon character often referred to as the world’s naughtiest boy, and who was never seen without his catapult.
In true Dennis style, the man, surnamed Zhai, said he smashed people’s windows “just for fun,” according to the police report.
When police caught up with him on Monday evening in the city of Wuxi, east China’s Jiangsu Province, he was still in possession of the fiendish weapon as well as a handful of as-yet-unleashed ball bearings, it said.
One of the victims of Zhai’s mischievousness was a family who said they were eating dinner when they heard the sound of a steel ball crashing through a pane of glass. Police said they received reports of similar attacks from several homeowners.
