Smoking blitz guns for officials
SMOKING civil servants are being lured with promises of prizes to kick the habit as the city looks for ways to enforce a smoking ban in public places.
“Civil servants, doctors and teachers are three of our major target groups as they are seen as role models,” said Tang Qiong, vice director of the Shanghai Health Enhance Commission Office, which is spearheading the campaign.
Civil servants who have been smoking for more than one year can sign up by the end of October and will be awarded souvenirs and prizes if they quit smoking by the end of March next year.
Shanghai is considering banning smoking at all indoor spaces as only certain types of public buildings are subject to bans under the current law. A survey earlier showed that over 93 percent residents supported indoor smoking ban.
