鈥楽nail house鈥 residents on the move
RESIDENTS in cramped 1920s homes in Jing’an District began moving to new homes yesterday under a government scheme.
Removal trucks arrived at Shaanxi Road, Haifang Road and Jiangning Road at 8am to take the belongings of 16 households to their new homes around the city.
They are the first of more than 1,000 residents of the Jing’an 80 Neighbourhood to be moved from “snail houses” — a Chinese nickname for small homes — in the area.
Under the city government acquisition and compensation project in launched last October, they will move to new homes in various parts of the city.
Residents seemed pleased to be moving. One old man told Shanghai Television he had been looking forward to the move for years.
“I want to move to the new home because I can have my own room,” said a boy named Shu Tianyang.
Their old homes, three-floor brick buildings, are almost 100 years old and are in a poor condition, said officials.
By Friday, 987 out of 1,009 house owners had agreed to the acquisition, relocation and compensation plan.
The city government has not said what it plans to do with the Jing’an 80 Neighbourhood site.
