Solar charging station has smart appeal
CHINA’S first smart solar-powered charging station for electric vehicles was unveiled yesterday in the city’s Songjiang District.
And to entice motorists to use the service, for the next two months they can charge their cars free of charge.
The 500,000 yuan (US$81,560) station, in the parking lot of Fangsong Community Center, at the junction of Xiling Road N. and Beicui Road, has charging points for four vehicles, plus a variety of connections.
Developer Shanghai STGCON New Energy Technology Co stressed the station’s smart credentials. It is linked to a smartphone app through which services can be booked.
Following the 2-month free period, customers will be able to pay by bank card, membership card or by telephone.
The 10-kilowatt power generation system works can produce enough electricity to fully charge the equivalent of 2.5 e-cars each day, said the Shanghai Commission Of Economy and Informatization.
It is also connected to the power grid to top up supplies on overcast days or when the solar system cannot meet demand.
More than 60,000 electric cars were on Shanghai’s roads at the end of October and 2,500 charging posts installed, said the commission.
Between 5 and 10 smart solar-powered charging stations are due to be installed in Songjiang by the end of the year.
