Son 鈥榖eat elderly father to death鈥

A MENTALLY-ILL man beat his father to death in their apartment in Baoshan District, police said yesterday.
The attack came months after the elderly man brought his son home from a mental health institute.
Police received a report that the 76-year-old had been killed by his son in their home at Yixian Road.
The suspect, surnamed Zhao, who is in his 40s, is said to have a history of mental illness since a teenager.
An upstairs neighbor, surnamed Wang, said Zhao knocked on his door for help on Monday afternoon, claiming that his father had fallen and hurt himself.
When Wang investigated he found the older Zhao lying in bed, his face swollen and with blood on his head.
Zhao then admitted to his neighbor that he had beaten up his father.
The elderly man was pronounced dead in hospital.
Police said Zhao is now at Baoshan District Mental Health Institute, where he had previously been staying.
His mother died last year and Zhao was taken home by his father in June. A home visit by officials afterward found no problems, it was reported.
