Son jailed after fatal accident in Qingpu

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison for causing a traffic accident that resulted in two deaths — one of them his own father.
Qingpu District People’s Court said yesterday the defendant, whose name the court gave as Xiaogang, was also sentenced to pay about 1.1 million yuan (US$161,800) together with his insurance company to the family of the other person who died in the accident. Xiaogang himself will have to pay about 500,000 yuan, the court said.
He knocked down a worker surnamed Gu when he was driving his van illegally onto the emergency lane of an expressway in Qingpu District to overtake vehicles in front of him on May 18, 2015.
Gu was killed on the scene as well as Xiaogang’s father who was sitting beside him in the van when it crashed into a parked construction company vehicle.
